Photography

In this photograph, I wanted to capture contrasts, starting with the black and white coloring of the image. The other contrasts are the chaos of the wheel spinning versus the calm, confident hands of the potter, and the mess around the wheel versus the order in the form that’s emerging at the center of the wheel. This photograph was awarded a National Scholastic Gold Medal in 2020.

Aging Beauty, Digital (2021)

This piece captures the natural, unfiltered expression of a woman at the height of the pandemic, taken on an afternoon at a park in Washington, DC. What makes her portrait so intriguing is the unnamable expression on her face: a complex mixture of sadness, exhaustion, and a slight smile. This photograph won a National Scholastic Gold Medal in 2021 and was selected for exhibit in the Bronx Documentary Center and The Pen Arts Museum in Washington DC.

Wildfire through Rose Colored Glasses, Digital (2020)

This photo was taken through a pair of colored sunglasses as I watched plumes of smoke rise from a wildfire just over a ridge in Colorado one town away. I captured the beauty and magnificence that can be produced by such horror as a wildfire with the potential to burn towns to the ground. It tells the story of how we often find ourselves viewing the world through the most beautiful of lenses. The blurriness of the edges caused by the sunglasses makes the image more surreal and reminds us that the beauty we see is only one perspective. This photograph was awarded a Scholastic Gold Key in 2021 and selected for Del Ray Artisans Gallery juried art exhibit “Flora & Fauna” 2022.
